Getting Started with GenogramAI
Learn the basics of creating your first genogram in under 5 minutes.
Welcome to GenogramAI! This guide will walk you through creating your first genogram in just a few minutes.
Step 1: Create Your First Person
Click the "Add Person" button in the toolbar at the top of the canvas. A menu will appear asking you to select the gender:
- Male - Creates a square symbol
- Female - Creates a circle symbol
- Other - Creates a diamond symbol
The first person you add is typically the "index person" - the main subject of the genogram.
Step 2: Add Family Members
Select a person to reveal the Quick-Add buttons around them:
- ↑ Up Arrow - Adds both parents with a marriage connection
- ↓ Down Arrow - Adds a child connected to the selected person
- ← → Left/Right Arrows - Add a partner with a marriage line
Pro Tip: Use AI Instead
Instead of manually adding each person, you can describe your family in plain English using the AI Family Architect. Just click the AI button and type something like "John married Mary, they have two children David and Sarah."
Step 3: Edit Person Details
Double-click any person to open the Inspector panel where you can add:
- Names (first, last, nickname)
- Birth and death years
- Occupation
- Medical conditions
- Cultural heritage
- Location
- Custom notes
Step 4: Create Relationships
While quick-add buttons automatically create relationships, you can also manually connect people:
- Press C to activate the Connection tool
- Click on one person's connection handle
- Drag to another person and release
The system automatically detects if it's a marriage (same generation) or parent-child (different generation) relationship.
Step 5: Save Your Work
Your genogram auto-saves to the cloud when you're signed in. You can also:
- Press Cmd/Ctrl + S to manually save
- Press Cmd/Ctrl + E to export as PNG image
- Press Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + E to export as JSON data
