Writing Effective Prompts

Good Prompt Example

"John Smith (1960-2020) was an Irish-American Catholic who married Mary Kim (1965), a Korean Buddhist. They had two children: David (1990), who has diabetes and works as an engineer, and Sarah (1993), a doctor. John's father Tom (1935-1995) died of heart disease."

This prompt includes: names, dates, relationships, heritage, religion, medical conditions, and occupations.

Tips for Better Results

  • Include birth years - Use format "Name (1960)" or "Name (1960-2020)" for deceased
  • Specify relationships - Use clear terms: "married", "divorced", "had children"
  • Add details - Include medical conditions, heritage, occupation
  • Be explicit - Don't assume AI will infer connections

What AI Can Extract

  • Names and relationships
  • Birth and death years
  • Marriage and divorce status
  • Medical conditions
  • Cultural heritage
  • Religious affiliation
  • Occupations

Always Verify

AI-generated genograms should always be verified against your actual information. Review relationships and data points after generation and make corrections as needed.
